A Little Political?

February 17, 2016 § 1 Comment

Most of the songs I write have to do with aspects of love (love found, love lost, hearts broken) or a person’s dreams (dreams shattered, dreams come true, dreams abandoned). Occasionally, however, my lyrics cross over into more political areas.

I am, at heart, a pacifist. While I do recognize there are times when fighting is necessary at times, I am sad at that fact. While I support those who are sent to do the fighting, I do sometimes question the wisdom and the motives of those who make the decision to send men and women into battle, just as I lament the collateral damage that usually accompanies such fighting.

At these times, I also question blind belief. The fighting and the religious fanaticism that often accompanies the fighting are what led to this song.

I’m not exactly sure what specifically inspired these lyrics, but I’m not sure it matters. In a few months or years, another episode would serve just as well as inspiration.

The Innocents

When I look to the east and I hear the cannon roar
I think to myself, God, please let this be the final war
I can see the innocents; I can hear the children scream
And I cry out, dear God, please let this be a dream

So many times we were sure
Each one would finally be the last
But I suspect we’ll still be fighting
Until the final soldier breathes his last

When I look to the west and I hear the leaders speak
I think to myself what happened to blessed are the meek
I can see the innocents; I can hear the mothers cry
And I wonder how God can let so many die

So many times we were sure
Each one would finally be the last
But I suspect we’ll still be fighting
Until the final soldier breathes his last

When I look to the sky for some heavenly sign
I think to myself, God, how can this be by design?
I can see the innocents who are always meant to pray
And I wonder if God will turn a blind eye today

§ One Response to A Little Political?

  • Anita says:

Beautiful as always my friend…unfortunately, until those in power, regardless of nation, start to learn and absorb the history of war and its eternal impact, there shall be no peace. 😦
