Slow Down

It’s the start of another new year. With it will come, no doubt, the usual demands on our time, our money, our energy, and our sanity.

I suspect this is especially true for parents, many of whom feel compelled to involve their children in the sport of the season – baseball, football, soccer, basketball, maybe even jai alai, for all I know.

We rush to keep our children active, involved. We rush to get from one place to another. We rush to get from one day to the next. In larger cities, this need for speed even seems to translate into speech. Movies no longer seem to develop stories so much as jump from one two-second (or shorter) shot to the next and become boring and drawn-out without an explosion, car crash, or some other big even every few minutes.

This shortened attention span also seems to have changed the music business, as well as the way most people consume music. I may be wrong, but it seems as if few people have much use or desire to listen to full albums any longer. Or they lack the means for doing so.

Instead, we download individual songs from iTunes or Amazon or cocoon ourselves within familiar songs we identify on Spotify or Pandora, seldom venturing into the realm of new music or listening to songs that aren’t “popular.”

I discovered this to some extent first-hand, when my wife and I put together a CD of original music to send out to friends and family for Christmas. Several of the recipients said they had not yet listened because they didn’t have a CD player for listening.

That experience, along with further reflection on today’s seemingly faster paced lifestyles, inspired these lyrics.

Slow Down

Everybody’s in a hurry
They’ve got no time for anything
Rushing from one place to another
Sanity hanging by a string

No time to stop and smell the roses
They’re on the go both day and night
Acting as is they’re on a mission
With just one chance to get it right

But if they could slow down
Enjoy the sights along the way
They’d find that life is so much better
When they take it day by day
If they just took a breath
And stopped to take a look around
There is so much to see
If they would learn to just slow down

Our lives seem so helter skelter
Everybody’s in a rush
Some days it feels as if life threatens
To weigh us down beneath the crush

Always so busy with commitments
Can’t bring ourselves to just say no
The speed of life keeps getting faster
With people always on the go

But if we could slow down
Enjoy the sights along the way
We’d find that life is so much better
When we take it day by day
If we just took a breath
And stopped to take a look around
There is so much to see
If we would learn to just slow down

The world around us has so much to offer
If we just open up our eyes
So many wonders to discover
That we don’t stop to realize

But if we could slow down
Enjoy the sights along the way
We’d find that life is so much better
When we take it day by day
If we just took a breath
And stopped to take a look around
There is so much to see
If we would learn to just slow down

We’ve got to learn to just slow down
