Payback is Hell

I’ve been a fan of blues music for a long time. Off and on, I find myself trying to write a blues song. It’s harder than it seems, but every once in a while, I do manage to come up with something. Such was the case tonight.

Payback Blues

(four-bar instrumental intro)

I’ve been around –
I ain’t no fool –
But girl. you played me for a sucker
Yeah, you took me to school

I didn’t know –
I couldn’t see –
That all this time, you were runnin’ ’round
And cheatin’ on me

So when I finally learned the truth
And saw through all your lies
You know it had to come
As a complete surprise
So many times I fell
For all your alibis
That when the truth came out
It hit me right between the eyes

I wish I knew –
What I had done –
To make you think you had to run around
And try to find your fun

I did my best –
To treat you right –
I never said a word
Although you always came home late at night

So when I finally learned the truth
And saw through all your lies
You know it had to come
As a complete surprise
So many times I fell
For all your alibis
That when the truth came out
It hit me right between the eyes

(instrumental)

One day I know –
The tide will turn –
And I will be the one who’s laughing
You will be the one who’s burned

Maybe then, you’ll finally
See things from my point of view
And when it hits the fan
It all will come right down to you
They say payback’s a bitch –
You will soon find out it’s true
When accounts are settled
And the final bill comes due

(instrumental out)
