The Technicolor Sky

August 13, 2014 § Leave a comment

On the way into work this morning, I saw a fragment of a rainbow. I say fragment because it was almost a straight line that seemed to begin in midair and end there as well. That fragment inspired this fragment.

Rainbows (a Poetic Fragment)

Multi-hued
Celestial shaft
God’s hand reaching down
The calm after the storm.
Heavenly smile
Comforting the frightened child
Reassuring
That all is well.
As anger dissipates
And gray once more returns to blue
Buoyant technicolor fragment
Erases hopeless sky of black and white.

Freaks, Geeks, and Color Streaks

August 11, 2014 § Leave a comment

This past week, my son took part in a sort of free-for-all community art project known as Freak Alley. For five nights, invited artists spray, brush, or otherwise apply color to outdoor walls, creating a large series of murals in the heart of downtown Boise, Idaho. For a sense of what Freak Alley is all about, check out this Boise Weekly story.

During the informal public unveiling of this year’s Alley, my wife said I should write a song about Freak Alley. So I did.

Freak Alley

You’ll see things you’ve never seen before
Opening your mind through a closed door
If you want to find out where it’s at
Just grab your hat –
And come with me down to Freak Alley

Went down to the Alley
Just to see what I would find
Images to blow
Or simply educate my mind

I saw Jimi there
And read the words of MLK
There’s no telling what you’ll find
On any given day

You’ll see things you’ve never seen before
Opening your mind through a closed door
If you want to find out where it’s at
Just grab your hat –
And come with me down to Freak Alley

Go down to the Alley
You’ll see things you didn’t know
Echoes of Warhol
Grandma Moses meets Van Gogh

Gloria and Angela
Still fight for women’s rights
All sorts of messages
Beneath the alley lights

You’ll see things you’ve never seen before
Opening your mind through a closed door
If you want to find out where it’s at
Just grab your hat –
And come with me down to Freak Alley

(instrumental:)

There’s no telling what you’re gonna find
But it’s guaranteed to stretch your mind
Creatures straight from Hell
Or a psychedelic wishing well
It all could bring sight to the blind

You’ll see things you’ve never seen before
Opening your mind through a closed door
If you want to find out where it’s at
Just grab your hat –
And come with me down to Freak Alley

Diving Into “The Block”

August 8, 2014 § Leave a comment

Creative thoughts and words have been a bit harder to come by of late. I’ve dashed a few lines here, scribbled a few words there, but nothing I’ve started has seemed to go anywhere. A catchy line or nice turn of phrase may be enough at a cocktail party, but it does not tend to lend itself to a completed lyric or poem.

So I decided to dive into “the Block” and try to use it as my inspiration. Here is the result.

Writer’s Block

Parched, the paper waits
For life-affirming nourishment.
Seeking a word, a line –
Even one dashed in anger,
Struck off as mistaken,
Or erased, as if unwritten
Leaving only a faint shadow to prove
Its one-time existence and demise.

Silence – the paper openly mocks me
Taunting, daring me.
Jot down anything –
Gibberish, a foreign language,
Doodles, or hieroglyphs
To show that someone was here
And tried to write
To fill the empty void.

The building blocks are blank.
No letters issue forth
No word flows freely
No phrase bubbles to mental surface.
Creative thought suffocated
Beneath the dry wellspring
Of this infertile imagination.
Perhaps tomorrow the seed will sprout.
